We just finished our unit on animal classification -- insect, fish, bird, reptile, amphibian, mammal. We are now into some enrichment activities that are really fun. Future lessons include: camouflage, feet and fins, fur and feathers, and behavioral adaptations. After that we do a unit on light.
So today we talked about different bird beaks and mammal teeth. Our investigation activities required 4 stations -- one with a large bowl of water with styrofoam floating in it, one with a tall narrow vase of water, one with different kinds of nuts, and one with a "log" of playdough rolled in uncooked rice. I set up on my round dining table and put different tools in the middle -- a slotted spoon, drinking straws, chopsticks (couldn't find my tweezers), and a vise grip (didn't have a nutcracker). The object was for the girls to experiment with the different tools to see which worked the best in each station. You may notice that each tool resembles a different type of bird beak. You will also note from the pictures below that we didn't get dressed for school today. That's one of the perks of homeschooling. Ha!
Then we talked about teeth -- incisors, canine, and molar -- their uses and what kinds of animals have what kind of teeth for what purpose. That investigation involved looking at our own teeth in the mirror. This was funny, because Vivian has no front teeth at the moment!

This is such a neat lesson. I'm really impressed with the Black Horse Academy. Wonderful pictures.
